our objects & wares for the home are designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind. they are all handcrafted from start to finish - skilled artisans using age-old techniques for traditional crafting and building, coming together to weave & stitch sustainable materials like jute and repurposed saree cloth - giving us a product that is beautiful, gentle on the earth and one that will stand the test of time.
all our raw materials are carefully sorted by hand, to leave us with the best quality jute fibres and fabrics. jute is grown & supplied by local farmers, who are often the family & neighbours of our artisans. this is how we support and build up the community around our artisans & their individual works. we pay a fair wage - guided by the world fairtrade organisation - for all works involved in the production processes for 71bay.
we take pride in creating products that are crafted to last, to be used & cherished over years to come.
please see below for guidelines on how to care for your products.

your baskets will arrive folded in a satchel or box and will need to be coaxed back into shape. fold creases back in the opposite direction to how they have been folded. you can also stuff the basket with towels or a heavy blanket and leave overnight / for 24-hours.
p r o t e c t i o n
it is always a good idea to protect your jute ware prior to use. we use a protective spray such as fibre protector by microseal. this is suitable for natural fibres and assists in filtering uv rays.

prolonged exposure to sunlight & water/dampness can change the colour and strength of jute fibres. care must be taken that your basket is not exposed to direct sunlight or dampness over extended periods of time.

jute fibres can be prone to mould if they remain damp for prolonged periods. if made wet, use a hair dryer from a distance till area is dry.
water-based spills should be blotted with an absorbent cloth or paper towel as soon as possible. basket should dry before being used again.
for oil-based / coloured spills, please consult a professional cleaning specialist. you should not rub these as this may spread the stain and loosen the weave - careful blotting is the way to go.
c l e a n
clean your basket gently with a handheld vaccuum attachment or shake lightly to get rid of fine dust & dirt particles.
p o t t e d p l a n t s
should you wish to use your basket to house indoor plants, please place a plastic tray at the bottom in order to catch any excess water from the plant pot. always remove plant from the jute basket before watering and return to the plastic tray in your basket only when drained through completely.

your rug will arrive to you rolled up and tied with a jute rope. take time to carefully snip the jute rope, taking care not to cut the actual weave of the rug.
your rug will be slightly curled at the ends from being rolled. jute is pliable, so do not be scared to roll the ends back in the opposite direction to how they arrived rolled, pushing or pulling lightly to get it back into shape. you may need to do this a few times before the rug continues to sit flat on the floor.
your rug, regardless of size, is completely hand crafted from start to finish. some tufts of jute may be visible in some parts of your rug. you can cut these with a sharp pair of scissors.
for any tassels that may be appear bent or fluffy, use your fingers or a newborn baby brush (as the bristles are gentle) to brush through and help sit flat. you may need to repeat this a few times.

prolonged exposure to sunlight & water can change the colour (darkening or yellowing) and strength of jute fibres. care must be taken that your basket is not exposed to direct sunlight or dampness over extended periods of time.
it is always a good idea to protect your jute rug or runner prior to use. we use a protective spray such as fibre protector by microseal. this is suitable for natural fibres and assists in filtering uv rays.

water-based spills should be blotted with an absorbent cloth or paper towel as soon as a spill happens - ensure that the spill seeps through, drawing out as much moisture as possible from the rug. do not rub - always pressing down / blotting - as it can cause stains to spread and loosen the jute fibres.
for red wine spills, blot with a white cloth dampened with soda in order to neutralise the colour and remove from rug. if this does not work, use a mildly dampened cloth with soap-water.
for oil-based / coloured spills, please consult a professional cleaning specialist.

regular vaccuming on both sides of your rug will help avoid the build-up of dirt & dust. the suction attachment is preferred as it is gentler than a brush attachment, which will essentially 'brush' over the jute fibres and can cause tufts to come up.
every once in a while on a warm & dry day, take your rug outside to shake / beat to dislodge any deep dirt or dust particles.

any food solids should be gently moved away as soon as possible - you can shake it out for the particles to fall away from the runner or placemat. any moist spills, you can wait for it to dry out before gently scraping or vaccuming it.
for oil-based / coloured spills, please consult a professional cleaning specialist.
s p i l l s
jute fibres can be prone to mould if they remain damp for prolonged periods. if made wet or you suspect some condensation (from warm food vessels being placed on top), use a hair dryer from a distance once the tableware is not in use - note that jute will tolerate some condensation but a build-up over time is what we want to avoid.

the jute motifs for our pendant shade are wrapped around a sturdy wire frame with a 40mm bulb holder inside.
always use a licensed electrician to install your pendant light. your electrician will need to source an electrical cable or cord; a bulb/lamp holder for a 40mm hole & light bulb. When deciding the length of cable or cord for your pendant, check to make sure the pendant will hang clear of head heights and have maximum impact in relation to the ceiling height of the space.
as our pendant shades are constructed of thick jute ropes, they may require a ceiling hook and chain / rope to support the weight – speak to your electrician about this.
