the word ‘kantha’ means ‘patched cloth’.
kantha, in bengal’s history, was born out of need. poorer women of the region would use their old saree cloth scraps to create functional quilts with a simple running stitch. these kantha’s kept her family warm during the colder months. over the years, kantha’s have become embedded in the traditions of bengal - a skill passed on through generations of women. they are symbolic too - of love, comfort, familiarity and protection.
elaborate kantha’s are made as wedding presents and for newborn babies. messages and stories are often stitched in these quilts - well wishes from women who have not had the opportunity to learn to read and write.
re-purposed and re-cycled means that the production of our heritage kantha-wares involve the use of no new cloth, dyes and, there are no by-products in their making.
